01 — OVERVIEW

How deck quoting actually works

Camera on. Walk through. Talk through what you want. A licensed Australian tradie signs off in under an hour.

Decks are deceptively complex to quote. The boards are easy — it's the substructure, the levels, the council compliance and the stairs that drive the price. Australian decks above 1m off the ground need balustrades and engineering certification. Above 3m, they're 'class 10' structures and need a DA in most states. Our AI walkthrough handles all of this in 44 seconds.

Material choice has the biggest impact on price. Treated pine is cheapest but needs annual maintenance. Merbau and spotted gum are the Australian favourites — durable, beautiful, but going up 8–12% a year in price. Composite (Modwood, Trex) is double the per-metre cost but lasts 25 years with zero maintenance and doesn't crack in the sun. We price all three on every quote so you can compare like-for-like.

The licensed carpenter reviewing your quote will also flag termite-risk indicators they spot in the walkthrough footage. Subterranean termites are the deck builder's number one enemy in Queensland and northern NSW, and we always quote the appropriate termite barrier where needed.

02 — WHAT THE AI SEES

What our vision model scans for

Trained on more than 26,000 Australian residential jobs across every state and climate zone.

Vision

Deck footprint & ground level

We measure the proposed deck area and read the natural ground level to determine how many stump-piers you'll need and at what height.

Vision

House attachment point

We check the wall framing visible at the proposed ledger position and flag if a brick-tie isolation strip will be needed (common on Queenslander-style homes).

Vision

Soil & termite indicators

Reactive clay, exposed soil, existing termite mounds nearby — all visible cues the AI uses to flag substructure requirements for the carpenter's review.

Audio

Use case & material preference

'BBQ deck for entertaining, low-maintenance, no stairs.' The AI sizes and specs the deck to match — and recommends composite over timber for low-maintenance briefs.

07 — FAQ

Deck quotes, answered.

Things homeowners ask before they book. If yours isn't here, the AI will answer during your walkthrough.

How much does a deck cost in Australia in 2026?

Per-square-metre, expect $380–$640 for a standard timber deck supplied and laid, $720–$1,100 for composite. A typical 30m² backyard deck lands at $11,000–$20,000. Decks above 1m off the ground add $320–$680 per linear metre of balustrade. Get a precise number for your site in 44 seconds.

Do I need council approval?

Decks under 1m high and not over 25m² are usually exempt development in most Australian states. Above 1m or over 25m² typically requires a DA. Our quote checks your council's rules against your deck spec and includes DA submission cost where needed (~$650–$1,800 plus council fees).

How long does a deck take to build?

Two weeks on site for a standard 30m² deck, three to four weeks for premium composite or decks with stairs and balustrades. Lead time on materials is usually 1–2 weeks. Decks needing council approval add 4–8 weeks upfront for the DA.

Composite vs hardwood — which is better?

It depends on your priorities. Hardwood is cheaper upfront, looks unbeatable, ages beautifully, but needs annual oiling and won't last forever. Composite is 60–80% more expensive, looks slightly synthetic, but stays the same for 20+ years with zero maintenance. If you entertain a lot and hate ladders, composite wins. If you love the smell of decking oil, hardwood wins.

What about termite protection?

Mandatory in most parts of Queensland, northern NSW, and the Top End. We quote a physical termite barrier (Termimesh or equivalent) at the bearer-to-ledger junction where required by AS3660. Costs typically run $480–$960 for a standard backyard deck.

Can I deck over a concrete slab?

Yes. We use timber battens fixed to the slab with masonry anchors, with rubber spacers for drainage. It's a great option for converting concrete patios into timber decks without removing the slab. The walkthrough will identify the slab and our AI quotes this approach by default if it sees existing concrete.
